Below is a fun interview & shoot I did in October for Emily Nicole of emilynicolephotos.com:

EN: How did you get started in photography?

PW: My mother is a seamstress and so I have had the idea of fashion/ design in me since I was little. Photography though started with my father’s heavy Nikon SLR camera. I used to play with it throughout since I was a youngster. Then I went through a phase of buying value packs of disposable cameras. After using an SLR camera, I loved not having to worry about breaking the big camera and I loved being free whenever taking photos. It was great to be able to take these anywhere and to take photos of friends at anytime. Yes, they complained and still do! After this I got my first HP digital camera; this is when my friends knew they were in big trouble, haha! The camera took fair photos, but was horrible for battery life. The cameras that followed got better and better, of course.

EN: How did you build your business?

PW: Word of mouth, social networking.

EN: What was your first paid assignment?

PW: A friend’s wedding.

EN: What was your best assignment?

PW: I have had so many exciting photo shoots so far, but my most memorable was the first shoot with a professional model. The model is just so beautiful and amazing to work with! It was a very last minute arrangement and I was nervous and excited at the same time. The images are still some of my favourite from all the shoots that I have done so far.

EN: What was your worst assignment?

PW: I do not know that I have had a bad photo shoot. If I am not happy with the way the shoot is going then I will make changes. Unless you have a creative director onsite helping you, then you as a photographer are the visionary and the project manager for the shoot (amongst other roles). You have to make the call if something does not look or feel right. There are also little things that may come up throughout the process or maybe a team member does not show up. I always welcome a challenge! For example, if your make-up artist cancels, just make sure that you have a list of phone numbers ready to other make-up artists whom you can trust. People in the industry usually understand that these things happen and will usually help if they are available. Another option in this case would be to educate and to train yourself on how to do make-up. Just be ready as it will happen to you too one day!

EN: What do you love about photography, and what you find most satisfying to shoot?

PW: I love shooting fashion with a great passion! Haha! I feel that it does not limit you like other genres of photography do. Creating fashion images allows you to create almost anything out of your imagination! I also love working with people and learning about their experiences and adventures!
